Privacy Policy

Sal is a calorie and nutrition coaching app. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. The short version: your data exists to power your coaching — we don't sell it, and you can export or erase it at any time.

What we collect

• Account details — your email address and sign-in identity (Google, Apple, or email) when you create an account. You can also use Sal as a guest.
• Profile & goals — age, sex, height, weight, activity level, goal weight and pace, which power your calorie plan.
• Food & tracking data — meals you log, water, weigh-ins, streaks, pantry items, saved plates, recipes and meal plans.
• Photos — meal, pantry and progress photos you choose to take. Progress photos are private to your account.
• Health data (optional) — with your explicit permission, weight and activity from Apple Health or Health Connect. Weigh-ins you log in Sal can sync back. You can revoke this in system settings at any time.
• Messages to Sal — the text, voice transcriptions and photos you send in chat, so Sal can answer and log for you.

How AI processing works

When you use AI features (chat, photo scanning, voice logging, meal plans, coaching), the content you provide — plus relevant context like your goals and today's totals — is processed by Google's Gemini models via our own server. Nutrition estimates are cross-checked against the USDA FoodData Central database. AI requests are used to produce your answer; we don't use your content to train models.

Where your data lives

• Your account data syncs through Google Firebase (Firestore, Authentication, Cloud Storage), protected by per-user security rules — only your signed-in account can read your data.
• Chat conversations are stored on your device, not on our servers.
• Notification preferences and similar settings stay on-device.

What we don't do

• We don't sell your personal data. Ever.
• We don't show third-party ads.
• We don't use your photos, meals or messages to train AI models.

Subscriptions

Sal Pro purchases are processed by Apple's App Store or Google Play. We receive purchase state (active, expired) but never your payment details.

Your choices

• Export — download your food log and weight history as CSV from Profile → Export my data.
• Delete — Profile → Delete account permanently erases your cloud data (profile, logs, photos) and local files. This can't be undone.
• Health access — grant or revoke Health permissions anytime in system settings.

Not medical advice

Sal provides general nutrition information and estimates. It's not a medical device and doesn't replace advice from a doctor or registered dietitian — especially if you have a medical condition, are pregnant, or have a history of disordered eating.

Children

Sal is not intended for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
